Updated Morning, Oct 4
We are so saddened by the devastation caused by hurricane Helene in our community. So many people have lost so much and are in need of supplies and support.
For general updates, we've been following:
Blue Ridge Public Radio - has a live blog online, or follow on Instagram, or listen on air (88.1)
Asheville Greenworks has been sending out helpful email updates
To provide support:
Donate or volunteer with Beloved
If you’re local and can volunteer, reach out to volunteer@buncombecounty.org and/or helenevolunteers@buncombecounty.org
List of ways to help from BPR
We know that right now folks are still trying to fulfill basic needs of water, food, and many are still without power and service. This resource is intented to help folks in Asheville get clothing, and to offer support to our locally owned secondhand stores if you are able.
If you are in need of clothing
Right now, this is what we know about getting clothing in Asheville:
Remnants Thrift and Sew in Mars Hill is distributing clothing and water
@hazeltwenty is taking clothes and shoes 12-4 daily and we are confirming if you can go directly there to get clothing as well
We are hoping to provide more detail and support soon. If you are in need of clothing or know of a place that is distributing clothing, please fill out this Google form with details or email us at lexi@avlclothingswap.com and we will share it on Instagram and update this blog post.
Here's what we know about our local secondhand stores
We are saddened to share that our wonderful clothing swap venue and beloved community destination, The Regeneration Station, has suffered tremendous damage. Second Chances, which is the thrift store that benefits Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, has also been damaged, as has the animal shelter itself (you can donate here). Atomic Furnishing and Designs has also been devastated. They have shared details about how to support them here.
All of the businesses along the river in the River Arts District have been destroyed, there is sadly no other word for it. This includes House of Kismet, Wildflowers Vintage, and Second Gear.
We have seen updates from the following local stores:
Emote - Closed until further notice, posting updates in stories when possible
Fleetwoods - Closed until further notice, you can donate here to support staff
Linden Consignment - Team is safe and they are working to support and reopen
Lollipops (Kids) - Team is safe, they are helping organize kid's clothing donations
Mine and Yours - Open as of October 4
More to Love - Closed until further notice but is accepting donations outside the store
Posies for Lulu Vintage - Raina's storage unit was destroyed and irreplaceable pieces lost. You can donate to help.
Roam Collective - Closed until further notice
Reciprocity - Assumed still closed
Revolve - Closed until further notice. Donate to help staff here and see an update from store owner Emily here.
The Garage on 25 - Shared an update
